SEEK AN ANSWER FROM THE SEER

"Why is there an entry fee?"

"Why is there an entry fee?"

Creativity might be free, but running costs are real.
Here are some of the ways your precious cash contributes to our purposeful mission here at The Modern Myth:
- Funds our prize money. We’re a small team of creatives on a mission to empower other creatives to make magic – but we need your support to make sure we can fund prizes that inspire and motivate each other.
- Keeps our electricity on. Plus our wi-fi connected and fluffballs fed (plus contributes to the big and little running costs we collect as a small business).
- Allows us to reinvest in our business and create an experience that cultivates your creativity (we’re saving up for a special membership portal we know you’re going to love!)
- Inspires us to dream big and plan even more ways we can challenge your creativity (a Modern Myth retreat, symposium, and even residency, anyone?)
- Funds our marketing and advertising efforts (so that we can attract awesome creatives for you to compete with!)
Thank you for supporting our small creative business!

"What’s the deal with copyright? Who owns the stuff I make for The Modern Myth quests?"

"What’s the deal with copyright?
Who owns the stuff I make for The Modern Myth quests?"

You do. You’re the boss, boss. We won’t ever publish your work without your permission. And even if you’re one of our top 30 finalists, we’ll come to a separate agreement with you for permission to publish your work on our site, social media or in our Myth Makers collection.
(And yep, this means you can enter your entry in other competitions or publish it elsewhere.)

"Will all your quests be mythology-themed?"

"Will all your quests be mythology-themed?"

Nope. So, if you aren’t into the myths, don’t worry – you’ll have an opportunity to play with other themes soon.

"Are your competitions open to participants world-wide?"

"Are your competitions open to participants world-wide?"

Absolutely. As long as you have an internet connection (so you can submit your entry), you’re welcome to enter. Our quests are hosted and managed totally online.

"Does my time zone matter?"

"Does my time zone matter?"

Yup. Our quest deadlines are in Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST). If you’re making magic somewhere else, we’ll need you to work off AEST time – and calculate how many hours ahead/behind you are - when submitting your entry. If it’s late. Because even if the time looks different where you are, we sadly can’t accept or refund late submissions. And that’d suck for everyone involved.

"I'm under 18, can I still enter?"

"I'm under 18, can I still enter?"

You can, but we’ll need you to get your parent or guardian’s permission first. To do so, please ask them to contact us at hello@themodernmythprize.com with their full name and phone number, plus written consent along the lines of, “I am [insert your name]’s parent/guardian and I give consent for them to participate in [insert quest title] on themodernmythprize.com”.
P.S. Keep your peepers out for our mini odysseys suitable for creatives under 15 years old.

"Can I enter as a team?"

"Can I enter as a team?"

Yep, you sure can. But any prizes won will be awarded to the individual who registers (not paid/given to each member of the team).

"Can I submit something I’ve already written?"

"Can I submit something I’ve already written?"

We kindly ask that your work be written specifically for the quest theme. We also do not accept entries that have been previously published.

"Okay, but can I use a character I’ve previously created?"

"Okay, but can I use a character I’ve previously created?"

Absolutely – provided your story is original and has been crafted for our quest theme, you won’t be disqualified.

"Can I write about real people, brands, or existing characters?"

"Can I write about real people, brands, or existing characters?"

You sure can. But heads up: If you’re looking to publish your story, you may run into copyright issues (that you’ll need to explore yourself).

"Can I include images, illustrations or graphics in my entry?"

"Can I include images, illustrations or graphics in my entry?"

No, not for the writing quests. But we are launching separate quests for our amazing artists, so keep an eye out for those.

"Can I use AI to create part/all of my entry?"

"Should I use UK or US English?"

No. You may not submit work that has been partially or completely created by AI. All entries will be run past our AI detection software.

"How strict is the word count?"

"How strict is the word count?"

Very. Your maximum word limit is 2,000 (excluding your title page/synopsis). If you’re even a word over, you’ll be disqualified. There’s no minimum word count limit, though.

"Can I include quotes, extracts, or excerpts from other works?"

"Can I include quotes, extracts, or excerpts from other works?"

Sure, but you need to give them credit, otherwise our judges might flag your entry as plagiarised (and disqualified).

"Shoot a stinky satyr, I’ve missed the deadline! Can I still enter?"

"Shoot a stinky satyr, I’ve missed the deadline! Can I still enter?"

Nope, sorry friend. Even if you’ve purchased a quest ticket, we can’t accept late submissions. So please be mindful of our quest deadlines. We’d hate to see you miss out.

"How closely do I need to abide by the theme?"

"How closely do I need to abide by the theme?"

You can be creative in your interpretation of your theme, but please make sure it’s included as an integral element of your story. If our judges can’t connect the theme with your story, you may be disqualified.

"The submission link isn’t working. Can I email my entry?"

"The submission link isn’t working. Can I email my entry?"

"If I can’t include my name in my entry, how will you find my story?"

"If I can’t include my name in my entry, how will you find my story?"

Our judging process is anonymous, but we’ll collect your information when you upload your story (so, don’t stress, our administrative helpers will know it’s your story).

"I’ve already purchased a ticket, but I’ve realised I don’t have time to enter. Can I get a refund?"

"I’ve already purchased a ticket, but I’ve realised I don’t have time to enter. Can I get a refund?"

Unfortunately, we can’t offer refunds on tickets, but if you email us at hello@themodernmythprize.com, we’ll give you a credit for a future quest (so you can still commit to your creativity and create something amazing soon!)

"I submitted my entry, but I didn’t receive email confirmation."

"I submitted my entry, but I didn’t receive email confirmation."

If you haven’t received confirmation, please re-upload your entry (and check your junk mail, just in case your confirmation is hiding there).

"Is there an awards ceremony?"

"Is there an awards ceremony?"

Oh goddess, we’d LOVE to host an awards ceremony one day. But, for now, our winners are announced and celebrated via email and in our The Myth Makers collection.

"I have an idea for a future quest."

"I have an idea for a future quest."

Oh? Colour us curious. We welcome suggestions for future themes and quests (and will even give you a shout-out if you’ve helped shaped a future quest!) Just email us at hello@themodernmythprize.com to contribute your idea.

"I’m in love with The Modern Myth Prize. Can I send you a love letter?"

"I’m in love with The Modern Myth Prize. Can I send you a love letter?"

Um, YES. Your compliments keep our creativity churning, so if you’ve got something nice to say, head on over to our contact page and praise away.
